Independent testing lab NapLab measured the support base of one Casper One at 1.76 pounds per cubic foot (PCF), which is a measure of foam density. Casper’s page for the Casper One gives no foam density figures.

Saatva lists the same coil support spec across all three Saatva Classic firmness options (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm), and Sleep Foundation notes they share the same support core, so the firmness difference comes from the comfort padding on top rather than a stiffer coil core. Saatva voids the warranty if the bed is placed on slats spaced 4 inches or more apart, or used without a center support on Queen and larger sizes.

Best for whom

Which mattress is best for how you sleep?

So far, Product.ai has checked this only for side sleepers in one small study. Firmness made no significant difference across that whole study. Each row below shows a result for one group within it and links to the finding behind it.

If you...What fitsWhy it fits
You sleep on your side and have larger hipsThe study authors suggest you avoid a soft mattress.

In a small 2019 study of 59 healthy people lying on their side, people with larger hips had more spinal bending (their spine curved further out of neutral alignment) on a softer mattress.

Sleep on your side and consider your body weightIn the same study, spinal alignment results varied when split by body weight, with no weight cutoffs given.
Across the whole study, firmness made no significant difference to spinal alignment.

Within the study, people with a higher body weight had more neutral alignment on a firmer mattress, and the authors wrote that people with a lower body weight were “better suited to a softer mattress”.

A reading of the Shore, Richards and Chohan abstract that finds it did not report a more neutral spinal alignment on a firmer mattress for participants with higher body weight, or did not report those with lower body weight as better suited to a softer mattress.

What firmness of mattress is best for side sleepers?

Your hip size may decide the answer. A small 2019 study tested 59 healthy people lying on their side. Firmness made no significant difference across the whole group. People with larger hips showed more spinal bending on a softer mattress. The study’s authors suggest that people with larger hips avoid soft mattresses.

How to choose

How do you choose a mattress?

  1. If you sleep on your side, what are your body weight and hip circumference?

In a 2019 study of 59 healthy people lying on their side, firmness made no significant difference to spinal alignment across all 59, and shoulder width and BMI did not differentiate. Within subgroups, people with a higher body weight had a more neutral spinal alignment (closer to their own standing posture) on a firmer mattress, while the authors wrote that a lower body weight was “better suited to a softer mattress”. People with a larger hip circumference deviated more from neutral on a softer mattress, and the authors say that group should avoid a softer mattress.

  2. What materials build the mattress from top to bottom?

Look past the surface quilting to the support core underneath. In lab tests, mattresses with identical top padding over different support cores differed significantly in deep firmness under heavier loads.

  3. What do a firmness label and a lab reading actually tell you?

Findings for this step are coming soon, as Product.ai has not checked it yet.

  4. Do you share the bed with a partner of a different weight or sleep position?

Findings for this step are coming soon, as Product.ai has not checked it yet.

  5. What does a wrong pick cost you?

Before buying, check the minimum break-in period before returns open, the return pickup fee, and how deep a body impression must be to qualify as a warranty defect; see the wrong-pick cost section below. Findings for this step are coming soon, as Product.ai has not checked it yet.

What would prove this wrong

A re-test of springs from the center and from the head and foot of used mattresses under a 1,296 g weight in which the two groups compress by the same distance.

The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics study found that center springs from used mattresses were weaker under compression than head and foot springs, and that the weakness may not be visible when the mattress is not in use. Its authors wrote that such sagging may compromise sleep posture. source

How this page knows

How findings on this page were made and checked

Product.ai uses axiomatic intelligence to turn a category into small, testable findings. The method's aim is that each finding rests on a primary source, which is the party that issued the fact, and carries a falsifier, which is the result that would prove the finding wrong so a reader can test it. Each page says how far it meets that aim. Read the general explanation of axiomatic intelligence

  1. 1

    Primary-source evidence

The aim is that each finding rests on a primary source, which is the party that issued the fact. Each page says how far it meets that aim.

Sources are Casper, Nectar and Saatva policy and spec pages, a NapLab teardown of one Casper One, and a 2023 mattress layer study. Others are a 2019 study of 59 people, the Polyurethane Foam Association, Sleep Foundation, and a study of 32 springs.
  2. 2

    Source check

When a source check runs, it traces each finding's numbers and mechanism to its cited source. Partial findings show only the part the source supports.

The 11 findings were checked on October 15 and 19, 2026, and 8 passed the source check. None of the 8 rests on primary sources in every detail. 3 did not pass, since 2 lacked backing sources and 1 was contradicted. On October 22, 2026, the 3 findings that did not pass the source check were narrowed to say only what their reviewed source quotes support. A person reviewed all 29 readings on this page against their sources on October 22 and 23, 2026.
  3. 3

    Falsifier and open gaps

Findings carry the result that would prove them wrong so a reader can test them. Questions the record cannot answer are listed as not yet answered instead of guessed.

All 11 findings name the result that would prove them wrong, and 11 questions shoppers ask are not yet answered.
