Hello-World Audit + Top-3 Ships — read the surfaces, ship your three highest-leverage calls

A first-week orientation project that doubles as a high-signal diagnostic. The candidate audits the Product.ai surfaces (web, chat, MCP, extension) and the SimplyCodes consumer surface with fresh eyes. From the audit, they pick three concrete improvements they would make and ship those three — code merged, in production, before the week ends.

Why we want this done

Two things at once. First, real work — the team genuinely benefits from a fresh-eyes audit; existing operators are too immersed to see what a new senior would catch on day one. Second, the highest-leverage diagnostic in the library. The audit-and-pick reveals the candidate's taste calibration, their ability to see what AI tooling generates that's wrong, and their judgment about leverage. The three ships reveal whether they can move from observation to action inside an unfamiliar codebase under time pressure. Senior practitioners who can articulate WHICH evals or surfaces produce false confidence beat candidates who set up dashboards but can't see — Phase 2 Design axiom A14, generalized.

Scope

  1. Day 1-2 — surface tour (kernels, drivers, design system, code surfaces) and audit notes
  2. Day 3 — proposal: the candidate picks their three highest-leverage improvements and argues for them in a one-pager
  3. Day 4-5 — ship all three, code merged to main, with PRs that any team reviewer can read

The candidate's choices about which surfaces to audit deepest, and which three picks they argue for, are the diagnostic. We are not telling them which improvements to make.

What success looks like

  • Three improvements shipped in production, code merged
  • Each ship traces back to an axiom or kernel claim — not "I think this looks better"
  • The audit doc reveals at least one thing the existing team did not see (the fresh-eyes test)
  • The candidate's three picks are not all in the same surface — surface-spread is itself a judgment signal
  • The candidate finished — three started and one finished is a fail; three solid ships beats five half-ships

Constraints

  • Claude Code or Co-work as primary substrate
  • 1-week duration is a hard cap; the deliverable is three ships, not three drafts
  • IP separation honored — no aios-methods access required for this project
  • Each ship must be code-merged or staged for merge; PR reviews are part of the deliverable
  • Fresh-eyes audit is not the same as a critique — the test is what the candidate notices, not how harshly they phrase it
